WATER-COLOUR PAPER – A CHEAP TIP

A cheap way of getting water-colour paper to paint on, is to buy it in large sheets from art shops. You will need a board and gum tape…all very cheep. You can get a timber merchant to cut a piece of chip board to any size you need, just make sure it is big enough for the size of picture you want to paint. My board is about 3 feet by two and a half.

When you get home, cut the paper up into the size you need, one sheet could do for several paintings depending on the size you want.  An advantage of using large sheets is that you can have a bigger painting than if using paper in one of those books/pads of paper.

Fill the bath with just enough water to cover the paper and soak for about twenty minuets. Then lift out, drain off excess water and lay on the board. Then stick the paper down along all the edges with gum tape. Leave to dry in a flat position over night.

No matter how wet you make your painting with washes, it will never crinkle or ripple.
