MODERN ART
Modern Art is often confused with Contemporary Art, but the two styles are centuries apart. Modern art began, ‘post impressionism’, primarily in the late 19th century and fizzled out in the previous century…around the 1960′s – 70′s. This is when Contemporary Art took over, and carries on today.
However, there is much debate as to the beginning of modern art, since French neoclassical painter, Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) took on a more
modern approach to his work later in his career and exhibited in 1784 what is considered a ‘Modern Art’ painting of its time, called, ‘Oath of the Horatii’ . Although, this does not mark the start of the new movement into modern art, it does allow us to trace its development.
