ABSTRACT ART
Abstract Art differs from Traditional Art, in that, where Traditional Art is a painting of the likeness of a subject or scene, Abstract Art is more focused on relaying an emotion or idea, instead of an actual ‘true’ portrayal of what is viewed before the artist. This is intended to create a challenge for Abstract admirers who attempt to discover the true meaning behind the painting.
Probably the first to create Abstract Art was Spanish painter/draughtsman/sculptor, Pablo Picasso
(1881-1973), who together with French artist/sculptor, George Braque (1882-1963), introduced a method of Abstract Art, called, ‘the cubist movement’. This style was developed between 1908 and 1912 and was a method of painting, which captured many different angles and standpoints of a subject, or scene, in the same piece of artwork.
You can see Picasso’s famous cubist painting, ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ on the top right of the home page of this site.
More On Picasso:
Picasso was born in one of my favourite places on earth, Malaga, Spain, where my sister now lives after meeting her Spanish boyfriend and subsequently becoming his wife. The painting in my gallery is of their most special place…’The Palace Gardens, Aranjuez’.
Picasso’s full name, if i get it right is: Pablo Diego, Jose, Francisco de Pailo, Juan, Nepomuceno, Mario de los Remedios, Cipriano de la Santisma, Trinidad..Rui y Picasso…all representing either Saints or relatives.
According to Picasso’s mother, his artistic nature was discovered at the tender age of 7 years old, when he would frequently ask for art materials.
Famous Art Quotes:
I love these quotes, they refer to subject matter in any art form:
‘O great creator of being grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives’… Jim Morrison.
‘The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection’…Michelangelo.
‘I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of colour or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on’… Mark Rothko
